National Adoption Month (November)

Before we look at the history of Adoption Month, I would like to address you the reader, from a personal perspective. On November 8, 1990, I was blessed to be adopted by a young woman who was unable to have children. For many years she struggled with the loneliness and emotional issues that comes with being childless. 

But God in his mercy and love, provided her with a way to have a child through the gift of adoption. My biological mother was only a teenager when she placed me for adoption. Her choice, provided the answer to years of prayers by my adoptive mother.

Now we will look at the history of National Adoption Month, celebrated in November each year. 

For most people November is the time of year when Christmas decorations are brought out, and Thanksgiving meals with family members are planned. November is also National Adoption Awareness Month. During the month of November, special attention is given to the adoption of children in foster care through presidential proclamations, recognition dinners and public awareness campaigns.

Statewide recognition of the adoption of children in foster care, took place in 1976. In an effort to raise awareness of the needs of children in foster care, Michael Dukakis, governor of Massachusetts, established the first Adoption Week for his state. President Gerald Ford proclaimed that Adoption Week would be celebrated nationally, later that same year. Participation in Adoption Week and its events, blossomed throughout the states and in 1995, President Bill Clinton proclaimed that November was National Adoption Month.
