The greatest weapons of all

By J.E. Nickerson

When we look at social issues around us, it is easy to become angry and want to lash out at various groups of people. While it is easy to attack each other in the public forum of social media or raise our fist in anger at people, this is not the best or more effective way of bringing change into society.

The most effective way of bringing change, is through praise and prayer. While it may seem counterintuitive, praising God reminds us of what he has already done in our life and society. It gives us hope for the future, because if God has done something in the past, then it builds our faith that he is able to do it again in the future.

Praise will take our focus off of the problems that anger us and put our attention on the God who created us and cares about us. Prayer is also a powerful weapon, because it it petitioning God to change something. While our first thought is usually, “God change that person or that situation”, effective prayer that really brings change, often starts by saying “God please change me and speak to me.”

Some people think that prayer is a time to shout at God about the things that are bothering them. While God does want us to tell him our problems and how we feel, prayer is ultimately about letting God speak to us and allowing him to give us his perspective on the situation.

When we let God talk to our spirit through his leading and bringing scriptures to our minds, he will often give us strategies for how we can deal with the situations that we are struggling with. Instead of raising your fist to people or simply shouting at God about the issues that are bothering you, raise your hands in praise and prayer to the God who made you and cares about everything that affects you. Open your heart and mind up to his leading and let him give you his thoughts and perspective on life.

When Jesus walked the earth, he did not fight with people in order to bring about change. Instead, he prayed to God. One of the most powerful things that Jesus ever said was, “Father thy will be done on earth as it is heaven.” While we cannot bring heaven to earth, we can pray and ask God to do his will in society. But this requires that we first allow him to do his will in our life.
