Waking up with God
Waking up with God
By J.E.
When you wake up, what is the first thing you think about? As an early riser, I cherish the early morning time of peace and reflection that comes when I first wake up. Listening to soothing music, doing some deep breathing exercises, and slowly waking up with a cup of coffee are an important part of my early morning routine.
But more important than your favorite blend of coffee or brew of tea is spending time with God in prayer and scripture reading. Finding some time to set your focus on God before the demands of the day sweep into your mind will give you a peace and stability that simply enjoying coffee and alone time cannot provide. King David spoke of rising early and seeking God. But this seeking was not a simple momentary awareness of God’s presence in his life. David described it as a vital necessity in his life. His words “seek diligently” and to long for and thirst for God like a thirsty man in need of water speak to a deep inner need and desire to be with God and enjoy the benefits of a relationship with him.
As you wake up each morning, make seeking God a vital need and part of your morning routine. Seek him, pray to him, and read scripture. It doesn’t have to be a long time. Most scriptures take less than 5 minutes to listen to as you lie in bed.
Seeking God’s presence in your day will not only set your focus on his goodness but also give you strength to handle whatever your day throws at you.
