The Deepest Love: Reflecting on Christ’s Sacrifice This Good Friday

J.E. Nickerson

Good Friday is not just a somber day on the Christian calendar—it is a day of profound love. It’s the day we remember the ultimate act of mercy and grace: Jesus Christ willingly suffering and dying for us. This was no accident, no misstep in history. It was divine love in action.

Christ, the spotless Lamb of God, endured unimaginable pain—not for His own wrongs, but for ours. He allowed Himself to be betrayed, beaten, mocked, and nailed to a rugged cross, carrying the weight of our sins so we might be free.

“But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.”

—Isaiah 53:5 (KJV)

This verse captures the heart of Good Friday. Every lash He bore, every insult hurled at Him, every drop of blood shed—it was for us. Jesus endured it all so that we might know forgiveness and be reconciled to God. He was not forced into this. He chose it.

The Roman soldiers who beat Him, the crowd that cried “Crucify Him,” and the nails driven into His hands—none of these overpowered Him. He could have called legions of angels to His defense, but instead, He submitted to the cross out of obedience to the Father and love for you and me.

“Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.”

—John 15:13 (KJV)

Jesus didn’t die a martyr’s death—He died a Savior’s death. On Good Friday, we stand in awe of a love so powerful that it triumphed over sin and a sacrifice so pure that it opened the gates of heaven to all who believe.

As we reflect today, let us not only mourn the pain He endured but rejoice in the love that held Him there. It wasn’t the nails that kept Him on the cross—it was love.
